Just posted a poll asking MBF members to select the topics they would like to discuss during 2012, or to suggest others to add to the list.

Doing your own PR

Julie Rae gave a highly useful and very interesting talk at Mayfield Business Forum  (MBF) last week on how to do your own PR.

Julie used to be a journalist and now runs  “Toys to You“, her own successful online business selling ethical toys.  So she has experience both in producing PR to be submitted for publication and, on the other side, in handling incoming press releases, looking for and selecting stories to publish.

Although I have been involved in PR for over twenty years now and talked to the press regularly during my time at Dell,  the talk still provided new tips and reminded me of things that I should be doing.  For those who are not experienced in PR, it provides a wealth of valuable  information.

PR takes time, but is free and so for all types of business it is a great way of marketing.  Larger companies can, and should, employ specialists to do their PR but smaller companies can still promote themselves effectively by spending a little time on their own PR.

Notes from Julie’s talk are downloadable from the meetings page on the MBF website where you can also find useful information from many previous meetings.

Royal Mail delivery times and NatWest opening hours in Mayfield

My latest blog post is on the Mayfield Business Forum (MBF) website.  It deals with the frustrations of later delivery times and earlier bank closing hours in our small village.

This is frustrating for smaller businesses who can now no longer bank cheques that arrive in the post on the same day.  As the recent climb down over the withdrawal of cheques guarantees shows, there are still numerous customers who use cheques and it is vital for small businesses to be able to get income into their bank accounts as quickly as possible in these difficult trading times.

There is no immediate happy ending as a result of letters sent to NatWest and Royal Mail to improve their service, but we will keep on trying,

Impact of the Olympics on a small village in East Sussex

Ever since I went to a meeting last month talking about the opportunities (and risks) presented for businesses by the London 2012 Olympics, I have been reflecting on how they can impact even a small village 50 miles from London.

Go for the bull’s eye

Today, 13th September, I have just posted on the Mayfield Business Forum website about the need to target your advertising for it to be effective. Targeting can be done by anyone by hard work and perseverance, but it often makes sense to use marketing professionals for their experience and the tools that they have available (this is an advert for my consulting services – not highly targeted but it is a simple test and I can measure the results!)

You can see the post here – Target and don’t be shy
